How Your Skincare Is Harming Your Hormones

and what to do about it

As a Nutrition Consultant, I talk a lot about what goes IN our body. But today, let’s chat about what to put ON our body.

For many women, cleaning up their personal care products is a crucial step in healing their hormones.

If you are trying to heal your hormones, improve fertility, regulate your cycle naturally, or just feel better in general, you need to start examining the beauty products that you use. Every day, the average woman uses 12 personal care products containing an average of 168 different chemicals (according to the Environmental Working Group).

Unfortunately, many of those chemicals are under-tested and under-regulated, and some are even know to cause harm. The United States has not passed any significant regulation to manage the beauty industry since 1938, which means that only about 30 chemicals total are currently banned or restricted in beauty products (just for context, Europe has banned about 1,400 chemicals). Common ingredients in makeup and skincare include formaldehyde, petroleum, mercury, parabens, and multiple compounds now linked to cancer. YIKES.

But what does this have to do with your hormones?

Toxic exposure can interfere with the way hormones are produced and the way that they function, getting in the way of hormones doing their job. Toxic buildup in the body also overwhelms our liver + detoxification system, which is responsible for detoxing excess hormones. If our liver is occupied with toxins, excess hormones build up and wreak havoc, messing with our periods, moods, energy, fertility, and metabolism. DOUBLE YIKES.

Don't stress, queen. I’ve got a solution for you.
